COEXISTENCE - Save into the mirror
2021
Mirror, Paper, Photo
I created an installation that allows people to experience the project physically, rather than through visual explanation of the model and drawings.
Due to the modernization of Komoro City, the ruins of Komoro Castle had been divided by the railroad.
This time, I aimed to integrate the Komoro Castle and to update the new identities of the castle.
In adding new values to Komoro Castle, I tried to create a public art not by disrupting the current situation and not by putting in new objects in the “place” but leaving it “original” as it is. I proposed building a dam on the Shinano River to the south of the site and installing the art on the reservoir. The gate of Komoro Castle which is no longer in existence due to a heavy muddy stream has been revived in the mirror world, the reflection on the lake.
In addition, Komoro Castle is the only castle in Japan that is located lower than the town. I drew a line on the stone wall of Komoro Castle to show the baseline and mirrored all the stones stacked on top of each other. Although tourists are often unaware of the castle lower than the town, tourists can be aware of the unique terrain of Komoro Castle from the single horizontal line I created.
