inujima isLAND ART
2022
This project begins with the unusual shape of Inujima.
Over the years, Inujima has been transformed by man into many different forms. Quarrying, copper refining, harbor construction, etc. It is impossible to imagine Inujima as it was in the past. However, I do not consider the transformation of Inujima as a negative legacy.
Quarrying led to the development of Japanese castles, gardens, and shrines. The development of refined copper due to rapid economic growth. The construction of ports and harbors that accompanied these development. All of these have led to the cultural and economic development of the Japanese people.
This is the unique identity of Inujima, which no other island has.
Therefore, for this exhibition, I create various works using the unique topography of Inujima. Rather than changing the existing form of Inujima, I aimed for a coexistence of expressions by adding various manipulations. Also, unlike the conventional concept of land art, the island itself was used as the base for the sculptural work.
